Dear friends,

Carmen has been married twice, but neither time has worked out very well. Both her husbands beat her.  The father of her three youngest children said he would follow her to church but never did. He would usually drink away all the money he earned as a concrete laborer. He has never helped with the children, even when they were married. Carmen only moved out of her mother's house a very short time after her first marriage, but has been living with her mom for the last 10 years. Carmen's brother and sister and their families also live on this rather small lot. Carmen's oldest daughter, Iris, age 14, was not in the photo, as she was in secondary school at the time.  Carmen has a steady factory job making metal things and pet toys.  Her family helps raise her children. This family has never had their own single family home, and living together as a family in their own home will be a first time experience for them.
