Juarez Updates
September 9, 2006 Last Week in Juarez - New Hope

Dear friends,

Judy (8 years old) has always been very close to our hearts. A group of muscles in her left leg and left hip don't receive any signal from her brain since birth. A diagnostic trip to the U.S. and 2 physical therapists with our medical teams here have different opinions. All agree exercise will strengthen her leg and hip. So far no exercises are without pain and Judy quickly drops them. We don't know if exercises can reprogram her brain, or God will heal this little one, but there has been little improvement since we moved here 16 months ago. Judy is left handed and leads with her weaker left foot.   Judy's Mexican bike broke last year. The pedal assembly is completely plastic and almost every similar bike we have seen is broken. Last year before the bike broke, I would help her balance. She could not ride without assistance, due to no strength in her left leg. We have wanted a bike for her for over a year. The night before we left for Denver, Jenny had one dream that we would get 3 BMX style bikes at a garage sale while in Denver, to help Judy and for her brother and sister. Last Sunday while driving to Linda and Steve's house, just 2  blocks away, we spotted 2 bikes and stopped. We told them we needed three, and another was quickly for sale. We ended up with the 3 bikes we needed. Sharing this story, we quickly got 5 more bikes before leaving Denver.  We arrived back home in Juarez Saturday night about 6:00 PM. We cleaned up the three garage sale bikes and brought Judy and her family over. Judy was able to ride solo after about 20 minutes for several hundred feet after we balanced her and started her motion. This was huge improvement from last year. This morning, Judy rode her (new) American bike over to the mission center with her sister Lizeth and Mom. We immediately went to help her, and to our surprise, Judy didn't need or want any help today to ride her bike. It was really something to hear her shouting for joy every time she started out. Judy was on the bike about 4 hours yesterday and today. New hope is born.

Besides the bikes, our Denver trip was very successful. God confirmed His Love for us and that we are where He wants us to be, doing the work He wants done in Juarez. I think we will have to rest when we are dead. We had 20 appointments and met with 49 people in 7 days while in Denver.

Blessings from our home, Juarez

jeff and jenny
